Game of Destiny
2016

This is a necklace, a string of coins, and a set of playing card. It brings luck, wealth, and health to the person who wears it, however, things are not so easy. There are ones that bring bad luck, accidents, diseases too. To get the good ones, you have to 'win' it from others, taking the risk of losing your own fortune, in the game of destiny.
In ancient China, Western Han dynasty, people started using coins for ritual uses, they called it Yansheng Coin. Instead of trading with it, Yansheng Coin is more a lucky charm than a kind of currency. Usually, on each side of the coin, there would be words which stand for wealth, good luck, or health. People would wear them as a necklace, or hang it on the wall in their home or workplace.

Coins seem to have more meanings than the literal word money to ancient Chinese. On the playing cards they used to gamble, instead of simple numbers, drawings of coins are more common to be seen. I can't help thinking, what are they have in mind when they gamble? Are the coins on the cards simply stand for money? Or maybe the drawings of the coins are 'signifiers of fortune'.

Gamble with your fortune, with your luck itself. This is what I called the game of destiny. I want to embody the true thoughts that people might have when they are gambling. Not only money, but also their future, their families, their dignities, or maybe their loves.
